Illuminating Hub Cities: The Depiction of Industry and Agriculture in the South

In her exhibition Illuminating Hub Cities: The Depiction of Industry and Agriculture in the South, Converse College senior and curatorial intern Maggie Vaughn explores the ways Southern painters captured the region’s agricultural heritage and industrial culture during the first half of the twentieth century. A gallery talk scheduled for Friday, May 10 at 6:00 p.m. will kick off the exhibition’s month-long residency at TJC Gallery in downtown Spartanburg. Featured artists include Sarah Blakeslee, Ida Crawley, Kelly Fitzpatrick, Crawford Gillis, William Gropper, John Lapsley, Margaret Law, Francis Speight, and Eugene Thomason. The Johnson Collection currently offers two competitive, comprehensive internships to students at Converse College and Wofford College each academic year.
