Alice Ravenel Huger Smith's luminous paintings reflect a body of work characterized by her experimentations in various mediums and mastery of watercolors. Smith is best remembered for her scenic views of Charleston and the surrounding wilds of the Carolina Lowcountry.

The Johnson Collection is represented in the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia with the 1935 oil painting,
Africa
by distinguished artist-educator Loïs Mailou Jones (1905–1998). The main exhibition, titled
The Milk of Dreams
will be on view from April 23 to November 27, 2022, in Venice. In both subject and style,
Africa
is a powerful elucidation of one of the main exhibition's three thematic inquiries: “the representation of bodies and their metamorphoses.”

Jo Sandman / TRACES
at Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center
After a life-changing summer studying at Black Mountain College, artist Jo Sandman decided to devote her life to art. At BMC during that pivotal summer of 1951, she studied painting with Robert Motherwell and Ben Shahn. It was this “galvanizing experience” at BMC that prompted Jo Sandman to decide to follow the path of an artist. Her restless curiosity always led the way towards experimentation with a wide variety of imagery, materials, and processes.

Imaginary Landscapes: Stories from the American South

The works selected for this exhibition break down the barrier between stereotypes, folklore, and lived experience. Observational and sometimes satirical, the works create a new map of the territory, a map whose borders shift and move through time. This is a show about the stories we tell ourselves and the ways we gather the contradictions of our identities and claim them as our own.

Painting the Smokies: Art, Community, and the Making of a National Park

The grassroots campaign to create a national park in the Smokies occurred during a period of great change in the region, fueled by renewed interest in the Appalachian Mountains. The exhibition explores how the Smokies inspired a generation of painters, and how art brought attention, activism, and tourism to the region.
