Information on the artist known as E. T. H. Foster is extraordinarily elusive, including the names behind his cryptic monogram. Presumed to have been born in England, historical records note that he was an itinerant artist who worked in the Hendersonville, North Carolina, area around 1877 and was active in both Colorado and Oakland, California, in the years immediately following. Some sources report that Foster committed suicide in Shasta County, California, in 1883 and that his gravesite alongside Crystal Creek has been washed away by flood waters. Another Appalachian landscape, Evening on the French Broad, N.C. (1877), is in the collection of the Morris Museum of Southern Art.
