Joseph Fiore ascended the ranks of Black Mountain College, beginning as a student from 1946 to 1948 and then serving as a member of the faculty from 1949 to 1956, making him one of the school’s longest tenured professors. Continually exposed to a wide array of visiting colleagues’ styles, the Cleveland, Ohio, native experimented with a multitude of techniques—gestural brushwork, geometric grids, and amorphous shapes—but never fully committed to any particular mode. #10 illustrates this amalgamation of aesthetic influences, which Fiore successfully blended to create an expressive vision in color and pattern.
