Kelly Fitzpatrick was an effective promoter for art and artists in his native Alabama. He was a co-founder of the Depression-era Dixie Art Colony, which attracted both established and aspiring artists for summer workshops. Many of the participants were instrumental in the establishment of Southern museums.
Like the classes at the colony, Fitzpatrick emphasized landscapes, often painted on-site. Jug Factory is a vigorously painted sunny scene of a potter at work (seen on the left). The brushstrokes on the tin roofs direct the viewer’s eyes downward toward jugs scattered in the foreground, while above is blue sky with billowing clouds.
