A Spartanburg native remembered for her keen intellect and lively spirit, Law worked as an illustrator to support herself in New York during her student days. The surviving examples of her illustrations show tight rendering that contrasts with the looser style she employed in her paintings. Working in media from watercolor to pastel, oil, and prints, Law portrayed the Southern experience in a signature style that was at once familiar and fresh, unidealized yet somehow affectionate. Athens, Georgia captures the dignity of residents and their routines through gentle caricatures and expressive brushwork.
