Beauty and Pattern in Common Things
TJC Gallery, Spartanburg, South Carolina
March 19, 2015 – May 28, 2015
“To me, the very great reward in the work is the habit of seeing beauty and pattern in common things, though it’s only a scurry of dust on the sidewalk. I know this, that if, for some reason I can’t paint, say, for several months, I begin to lose something of that seeing.”
~Gladys Nelson Smith
Women artists are especially well represented in the Johnson Collection, as borne out by this exhibition celebrating their achievements. Featuring works by Josephine Couper, Elaine de Kooning, Marie Hull, Adele Lemm, Edith London, Blondelle Malone, Corrie McCallum, Willie Betty Newman, Pat Passlof, Gladys Nelson Smith, Mary Leath Thomas, Helen Turner, and Catherine Wiley. This capsule exhibition served as an curatorial exercise for TJC's larger investigation of the subject, Central to Their Lives.
