minumental/MONUMENTAL
TJC Gallery, Spartanburg, South Carolina
June 16, 2016 – July 28, 2016
Whether miniature or monumental, artists manipulate scale, size, and shape as a means to reevaluate the world around us. Tiny works tantalize with their exceptional detail and intricate compositions, while a colossal format overwhelms in its ambition and boldness. minumental/MONUMENTAL brings together a selection of pieces that ask the viewer to consider how dimension conveys and impacts experience. Small-scale objects encourage an intimate, personal encounter, whereas mammoth proportions engulf the viewer in a collaborative and shared environment. In this exhibition co-curated by TJC staffers Erin Corrales-Diaz and Aimee Wise, works by artists such as Jack Beal, August Cook, Gina Gilmour, Robert Gordy, Alfred Hutty, Oli Sihvonen, Merton Simpson, Eugene Thomason, Bob Thompson, and Jack Tworkov reveal how size can elevate the ordinary, spark imagination, and showcase technical skill.
