TJC Gallery, Spartanburg, South Carolina
August 7, 2019 – October 25, 2019
“The great artists can destroy form after form, constantly seeking the unique twist that will appear in the end as if he owned the entire array of shapes and colors.” ~Romare Bearden
By assembling paper, cloth, wood, or metal, artists since the early twentieth century have manipulated materials to produce exciting and sometimes sculptural works of art which break free from two-dimensional form. Featuring works by John Acorn, Benny Andrews, Romare Bearden, John Chamberlain, Robert Courtright, Herbert Creecy, James Denmark, Thornton Dial, William Halsey, Douglas Houchens, Ray Johnson, Edith London, Laura Spong, John Urbain, Jean Varda, and Karl Zerbe, Cut and Paste showcases the various techniques and styles artists have employed to create collage.
