Although a native of Ohio, Paul Sawyier is intimately associated with Kentucky where the scenic terrain inspired his fresh landscapes. The lush brushwork and the daubs of bright color demonstrate his embrace of the impressionist aesthetic.
After studies in Cincinnati, Sawyier enrolled at the Art Students League in New York where William Merritt Chase was a mentor. Upon his departure from school Chase gave his protégé the following advice: “Be yourself Paul—be your individual self . . . be Paul Sawyier.”
