Born in Randolph County, North Carolina, Anne Frances Hill was described as “outspoken” and “fiercely independent.” Following her graduation from UNC Greensboro under Gregory Ivy, she taught in Greensboro’s public school system. Hill subsequently moved to New York, where she worked as a display designer at the New York Public Library. While there, she received private lessons from another prominent artist, Lyonel Feininger, and obtained a library science degree from Columbia University.

She spent much of her career moving between North Carolina and the West Coast, switching between an artist’s profession and that of a librarian. Her work can be characterized as small-scale, meticulously cross-hatched, and abstract, many with an emphasis on circles.
