Located in the heart of downtown Spartanburg, TJC Gallery presents quarterly rotating exhibitions that draw from the Collection’s extraordinary holdings.

An Intimate Museum Setting

Our mission is centered on being a presence rather than simply a place.

For this reason, we keep TJC Gallery intentionally intimate—just two rooms—allowing more of the Collection to be shared with community partners and audiences across the country.

TJC Gallery is the public exhibition space of The Johnson Collection. Through rotating exhibitions drawn from the collection and collaborative projects with community partners and personalities, the gallery offers visitors an opportunity to engage with the rich and evolving story of the American South. 

Each exhibition is thoughtfully curated to present new perspectives on Southern art, highlighting both celebrated artists and lesser-known voices whose work expands our understanding of American art history. Because exhibitions change throughout the year, every visit offers something new to discover. 

Whether you are a first-time visitor or a returning guest, TJC Gallery invites you to slow down, look closely, and explore the many stories found within works of art.

Art for Y'all

Admission to TJC Gallery is free. Visitors of all ages are welcome. 

TJC is committed to providing an accessible and welcoming experience for all visitors. Photography (no flash) is encouraged in the gallery. Staff are on-site to assist with the exhibition and answer questions. The gallery is wheelchair accessible. Visitors who require additional accommodations are encouraged to contact us in advance so we can help plan a comfortable and enjoyable visit.

ArtWalk: Pairings and Paintings with Bond Street Wines 5 – 8 PM

Public Programming

Throughout the year, TJC Gallery brings audiences together through talks, lectures, panel discussions, guided tours, educator resources, and community programs that encourage close looking and conversation.

ArtWalk is a free, self-guided tour of Spartanburg’s museums and galleries, held on the third Thursday of each month from 5–8 p.m. Participating venues offer rotating exhibitions, gallery openings, programs, and light refreshments, with programming changing monthly to complement featured exhibitions.

Every Tuesday morning at 9 a.m., TJC Gallery hosts yoga led by Alix Refshauge, RYT 500. Each 75-minute class combines Flow and Yin poses to encourage movement, stillness, and renewal, surrounded by TJC’s rotating exhibitions in downtown Spartanburg.

All levels are welcome. Please bring your own mat and props. Drop-in classes are $10, payable by cash or Venmo.

TJC Gallery offers a free yoga class during the opening week of each new exhibition, held once every three months. All skill levels are welcome, and participants should bring their own mat and props. Space is limited, so advance registration through Meetup is required. Follow TJC on social media for upcoming dates and updates.

Make Art at TJC Gallery

Did you know you can create your own artwork at TJC Gallery? Visitors of all ages are invited to “Color Our Collection” during open hours, with coloring pages featuring works from the Collection that are updated with each new exhibition.

Prefer to draw? Artists of all ages and skill levels are welcome to sketch in the gallery, whether drawing from observation or finding inspiration in the current exhibition. Seating and art supplies are provided.

Tours and Groups

Interested in an educational tour for your group? TJC staff offers guided tours of our gallery during non-public hours, Monday through Friday.

TJC Gallery welcomes school groups, university classes, community organizations, and others interested in exploring the art of the American South. Tours can be tailored to different audiences and may focus on exhibition themes, individual artists, American art history, or the broader cultural history of the South.

Guided tours encourage close observation, discussion, and active engagement with works of art. Advance scheduling is recommended for all group visits. Please complete the form below or email our staff directly to arrange a visit.
