A Midwesterner by birth, Wayman Adams studied abroad under Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase. Upon his return from Europe, he followed in the footsteps of his instructors, executing figure paintings rendered with bravura alla prima brushwork. A masterful oil sketch, The Three Graces exudes the joy and innocence of youth. It also exemplifies Adams’ direct technique as reported by a contemporary: in the “early stages the color was kept exceedingly simple and the tones quite flat, but so true in hue and value that the final painting appeared to be a matter of relatively slight modifications.”
