A well-traveled Dutchman, Anthony Thieme settled in New York in 1917, where he initially worked as a set designer. Twelve years later, he made Rockport, Massachusetts, his base and taught popular workshops there during the summer. Students, he bemoaned, “expect to be artists with one course of instruction. Few of them want to learn to draw. . . . One sees, therefore, a great deal of superficial work lacking in sincerity.”
Thieme had a great ability to capture reflections, as seen here. His effective use of quick brushstrokes and color highlights make for a cheerful scene despite the modest circumstances of the people and their dilapidated structure.
