Raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Elliott Daingerfield is considered one of the most prominent artists with North Carolina roots. In 1880, he moved to New York City to enroll at the National Academy of Design, followed by a stint at the Art Students League with Impressionist George Inness.

In 1886, Daingerfield left for Blowing Rock, North Carolina, to recover from an illness. Having found a source of inspiration in the Blue Ridge Mountains, he set up a painting studio where he taught private lessons. In the winter, he returned north to teach classes at the Philadelphia School of Design and the Art Students League. Daingerfield encouraged countless students to visit the South, but he also brought the international academic style of painting to his students in the South. His Tonalist and Impressionist influences are clear in the moody, mystical quality of his colors and brush strokes.
