Art Student is a witty, maybe even satirical, interpretation of a vignette Thomason had witnessed countless times. The image contrasts dramatically with Thomason's 1928 portrait of George Luks painting in his studio.

Thomason often used inexpensive materials and frequently recycled previous paintings. Visible here are telltale signs of brushstrokes that do not relate to the new figural composition. These traces offer proof that Thomason painted directly on his surface without any preliminary drawing.
