A native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Margaret Law was the first student to graduate from Converse College with a concentration in studio art. She later pursued formal artistic training in the North, studying with some of the era’s most influential instructors, including William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. After returning to Spartanburg in 1936, Law joined fellow artist and friend Josephine Couper in founding the Spartanburg Arts and Crafts Club, an organization that fostered the region’s growing artistic community. Throughout her career, Law worked across a variety of media and styles, consistently drawing inspiration from the landscapes, people, and everyday life of the American South.
