“It’s a very personal thing when you’re painting,” Hattie Saussy once observed. “When you’re an artist you have to get very silent with what you’re doing. . . . If it’s going to have meaning, it has to have all of you in it, and it has to have the effort of production. It has something in it for others, yet it will always have your presence in it.”

With its dappled sunlight and wavering Spanish moss, Path with Mossy Trees exemplifies Saussy’s contention. One feels that she knew the locale intimately and sat in silence as she observed this sandy path.
