Typical of her normally anonymous portraits of women in relaxed, informal postures and casual settings, this is believed to be Nash’s own granddaughter (and namesake). The gentle downward tilt of the girl’s head might connote anything from shyness to piety, shame, sadness, fatigue, or contemplation. It will be up to individual viewers, each bringing their own particular expectations and perspectives, to determine what this girl may be feeling and why.
