Marie Hull was an active participant in the art scene of Jackson, Mississippi, sponsoring art workshops for Black children and advocating for the establishment purchase prizes at the exhibitions of the city’s art association. These efforts laid the foundation for what would become the Mississippi Museum of Art.

In the mid-1920s, Hull spent time in Florida and was enthralled by the exotic birds she encountered. Red Parrots exemplifies her response, and despite its acidic, yellow-green background it is an alluring image of two parrots, apparently in conversation. Her thick handling of paint, the dark lines that appear to drip, and the curious purple flowers further create an enticing composition.
