From early in her career, Anni gravitated to graph paper, which furnished a helpful template for visualizing weaving warps and wefts. Thus, the shift from three-dimensional textile work to drawn or printed works on paper let Anni experiment with a format she had studied for years. Her preference for understanding a medium and working within its constraints extended to her printmaking practice, where she sought to bring her theoretical ideas, previously conceived on a loom, to new life on paper. This print closely resembles a preparatory design Anni separately produced on paper, which featured graph lines from her working notebook in which she sketched her designs, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional, in pencil before printing or weaving them.
