A native New Orleanian who began creating art in her mid-thirties, Ida Kohlmeyer considered modernism her “great awakening” and embraced the freedom of working in an abstract style. By developing her own schematic code of painted symbols such as arrows, numbers, and x’s, she communicated inward feelings and expressions. This untitled piece from her Circus Series is a wonderful example of the artist’s “code.”
