Lawrence Mazzanovich arrived in Tryon, North Carolina, in 1923, a successful middle-aged artist in search of a fresh start. He had prospered, critically and commercially, while working in the Northeast, with exhibitions of his impressionistic landscapes at prestigious galleries in New York and Chicago.

In Tryon, Mazzanovich embraced a different lifestyle, combining community theater and musical performances with painting. The local views, framed by the rolling hills of the Piedmont and hazy mountain peaks, led to paintings that were gentler and softer than his earlier work.
