During his youth in Germany, Carl Brenner fell in love with his native woods. This keen interest continued after he immigrated and settled in Louisville, Kentucky, where he prospered as a landscape painter.
The cool muted tones of Winter evoke a chilly silence, which is alleviated by the hint of a setting sun. Open brushstrokes define a snowy foreground, while a strong diagonal moves through Brenner’s beloved beech trees toward a rustic cabin in the distance.
