Continuing the designer-craftsman ideal of the Bauhaus, Anni Albers founded the weaving program at Black Mountain College, making it a central component of the curriculum. Fascinated with the properties of materials, Albers sought to dispel the marginalized status of crafts, arguing for its artistic potential and import. She thrived on the limitations of the medium, challenging herself and her students to break through the boundaries of possibilities. For example, in With Verticals, a hypnotic pattern and equilibrium of horizontals is punctuated by vertical lines of varying lengths.
