Workshop

G. Caliman Coxe started his artistic career as a self-taught illustrator for local theatres. At forty-eight years old, he enrolled at the University of Louisville, becoming the first African American to graduate from its fine arts department. In 1959, Coxe co-established the Louisville Art Workshop, an equitable space where he mentored numerous artists while creating experimental abstract paintings of his own. Created while Coxe attended the University of Louisville, Workshop depicts an architectural space outlined in heavy black lines painted in reds and blues.
