Susan (Susu) Phifer Johnson and George Dean Johnson Jr. are passionate philanthropists committed to enhancing the educational environment and cultural vibrancy of their hometown, state, and region.

Phifer Science Hall, named for Susan “Susu” Phifer Johnson, was constructed with funds from a campaign launched in 1998 with a $15 million challenge gift from Susu, an alumna and life trustee of Converse University, and her husband George. The paintings in Phifer Science Hall feature a collection of artwork on permanent view by Southern female artists from The Johnson Collection.
