Hale Woodruff
Serving as The Johnson Collection’s Director, Sarah Tignor holds an Art History undergraduate degree from Converse University as well as a Master of Arts in Museum Studies from Johns Hopkins University. For over nineteen years, she’s had the honor to help guide TJC. Her curatorial work is focused on 20th century artists from the American South, arts connected to the experimental enclave of Black Mountain College, and mid-century women creators. A California native, Sarah has called Spartanburg home for the past 19 years where she and her husband and young son enjoy the area’s vibrant arts culture as well as the beautiful Carolina outdoors.
Favorite Piece from the Collection
I am drawn to Hale Woodruff’s Return of Europa because it reveals the artist’s deep engagement with the art-historical legacy of Greek mythology while reimagining that tradition through the lens of the African Diaspora. Woodruff connects the ancient story of Europa to the complex histories of migration, displacement, and cultural exchange. The work’s layered references demonstrate how he used established art-historical narratives as a means of exploring the enduring connections between Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
